Learning Composition the Paxton Way

The Process

Each video offers guidance on composition pictures with a focus on different topics. Using the power of imagery, I virtually walk you through each aspect of a picture and share insights on how I frame it to make it more engaging. This way, you can learn how to replicate the process on your own, and obtain outstanding results.

My goal is to fuel your creativity and passion for photography by enhancing your skills and technique.

The Goal

In photography, our ultimate goal is to evoke emotions and captivate the audience through our art. The beauty of composition lies in its ability to transform an ordinary photo into something extraordinary. How we choose to frame our shots and abide by the principles of composition is crucial to achieving this goal.

Every shot is an opportunity to communicate and connect with our viewers on a deeper level. Embrace the power of composition and unleash your creative potential. Let us aspire to create truly captivating and unforgettable photographs.

For the Average Person

My videos and instructions are for people who take photos for any reason. We don’t worry about frame proportions like professionals do. Our photos are for remembering moments, sharing on social media, and sometimes printing.

The videos help you learn how to compose your photos, and having to stick to a certain aspect ratio would limit the learning. Once you learn how to compose well, you can then apply that knowledge to different aspect ratios.

What's The Story’s

The first question we ask is “What’s the story we want to tell”. Often there are potential multiple stories but we can only tell one.  Once identified we work to accentuate that story and remove what distracts from our story.

Less is More

Unlike English High School where we had to write 7 pages of utter nonsensical gibberish to satisfy the length requirements of a paper for a misguided English Teacher (did you sense my disgust?) in photography Less is always more.

As we observe a photo we can only a certain amount of information and its typical of a lot of photos to have too much info and then our brains tend to lose interest.

Relationship

Yes, I’m currently in the market but regarding elements in a photo how do they relate, how do you make them relate.  I discuss in some of these videos.

Size

We attribute the size of the elements in a photo to importance.  Its important to ensure the size of various parts of the photo are in good proportion with each other that lead us into the story we want to tell.
